This weekend, Philadelphia's hip-hop community gets to have fun in the sun again at the annual B-Boy BBQ. Every year, folks come from all over to participate in the now international event in which DJs, MCs, B-Boys, and graffiti writers do what they do best in a collaborative community spectacular. We've been apart of the festivities since day one 10 years ago and with events now happening on the west coast, in Europe, and in Rochester, it's great to know folks are keeping the hip-hop culture going and growing across the world. Gone Phshin’: Illvibe Collective welcomes DJ Phsh to the team

Illvibe Collective is a DJ/Production team from Philadelphia comprised of Statik aka Mr. Sonny James, Skipmode, Panek, Lil’ Dave, and Phillee Blunt. The collective has developed a global reputation for traditional DJing, taste-making, and production for over a decade with their unique blend of traditional hip-hop, funk, soul, samba, reggae, house, and electronic music.

Matthew Fishman Dickerson, better known as DJ Phsh (pronounced Fish) started rocking with Illvibe at the Arts Garage in 2007 when they were doing the Duplex party with Boombastics. Whether there were 300 people in the spot or 30, Phsh, then 18 years old played inspiring sets and impressed the crew with his knowledge of music new and old in multiple genres. It was somewhat of a training ground to mold the talented DJ that Phsh has developed into.

Since then Phsh has solidified himself as a staple in Philadelphia among the local dance community playing a wide range of tunes at The Gathering and with his Superdope! party weekly at the legendary Fluid Nightclub. He has been the DJ for Money Makin Jam Boys, Selena Carrera, TuPhace aka Mike Taylor, and Hezekiah.

Illvibe Collective recently released their debut album, All Together Now on Soulspazm/Fat Beats Records to wide critical acclaim. The crew are developing plans for the remainder of the year including an All Together Now Remix album, a follow up EP, a European tour, a series of mixtapes, and official remixes for other artists. Having Phsh on board to add his flavor to their up and coming endeavors will undoubtedly strengthen Illvibe’s foundation and help push their style in new directions.

Tonight, the Champion Sound crew, Illvibe Collective's extended family in Miami is hosting the All Together Now album listening party. The event is also a charity benefit for those affected by the recent disaster in Japan. It is also the last Champion Sound event @ Electric Pickle. A special night to say the least. Rich Medina on All Together Now

In 2009 Record Breakin’ Music released the highly successful debut full length album Audio/Visual : Sounds Inspired by all Things Visual from artist, club and radio dj, playwright, Anthony Valadez. This album was a collection of beats that became modified with the addition of live instrumentation to add texture. The concept of the album was based on the merger between sight and sound. Each song, sampled and layered is inspired by a visual that inspired Valadez. “I’ve always been inspired by the visual element of everyday life.” Valadez explained. Valadez enlisted the vocal talents of Stockholm’s now New Yorker Kissey Asplund and Los Angeles’ Wendisue on a few of the tracks. Nevertheless, majority of the project was an instrumental soundscape accompanied with the musicianship of Dexter Story (Life Force Trio, Build an Ark), Shaunte Palmer (Raphael Saadiq, Talib Kweli) and Evan Lasrey.

Fast Forward to 2010. A group of producers from across the country including our very own lil' dave and Mr. Sonny James remixed select tracks from last years release adding their own flavor and giving Audio/Visual a fresh new look and sound.

The Return of the B-Boy BBQ

June 12, 2010 marks the return of one of Philadelphia's illest and most legendary events, The B-Boy BBQ. Years ago, Pose Two, Stef Tataz, Rich Medina, and Cue Records helped organize a day of free entertainment for all ages with support from Philly's entire hip-hop community. Each year, we would hang out at the Hawthorne Rec Center in South Philly and listen to beats from cats like The Record Player, Skeme Richards, Illvibe Collective, Rich Medina, and other skilled DJs as well as performances by 84, Reef The Lost Cauze, Hezekiah, and others. The event was on hiatus for a few years after Pose Two relocated across the country to California but is returning this summer with help from 84, Illvibe, DJ Phsh, DJ Ambush, DJ Aktive, and more. The BBQ has been moved to a new location at 48th and Westminister but will be sure to be a blast. Bring yo kids.

This past Tuesday was the worldwide release of lil'dave's debut record, "Chips & Salsa" b/w "Cafe Cubana", on the Record Breakin' Music label. Both tracks are latin flavored party records that will rock any club or iPod. You can get the release on a limited edition vinyl 45 or as an mp3.
